Jesus' Second Coming

And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

(Mark 13:26-27 ESV)

The end of the gospels tells us that when Jesus was taken up to heaven an angel told the disciples that Jesus would return the same way he left. Here in these verses we see the fruition of that promise when Jesus plainly tells his disciples that he would return in the clouds. Not only will he return in the clouds but he will return with great power and glory. This second coming of Christ will be far different than his first. Jesus came humbly the first time born in a manger, a carpenter’s son who had nothing special about his appearance. The first time Jesus came his mission was to pay the penalty for our sins by dying on the cross. Now that he has done that he will have a different mission.

A big part of that mission will be to gather the elect from all over the heavens and the earth.  What a tremendous sight this will be to not only see him in all his glory in the clouds, but know that he is coming for you and me! His mission has always been for his church. He died to pay the price of their sin redeeming them from the destiny of hell. He left them on earth and sent them the Holy Spirit to be with them while he prepared a place for us in heaven! Then he will return for us and take us to be him as he has promised.

How does this truth of Jesus second coming comfort you? Will you worship God this week for the wonderful promise of his great and mighty return for you?
