Is it I?

And when it was evening, he came with the twelve. And as they were reclining at table and eating, Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me, one who is eating with me.” They began to be sorrowful and to say to him one after another, “Is it I?”
(Mark 14:17-19 ESV)

As Jesus and the disciples gathered to take part in the Lord's supper Jesus tells them something that seems unbelievable to them. One of them is going to betray him. It is clear that no one suspected it was Judas because they all began to search themselves and ask the Lord, "Is it I?"

We can tend to always find the error of the disciples when we read through the gospels, but this time the disciples did the perfect thing. They searched themselves rather than pointing fingers. But how often do we follow their lead and search ourselves? When you read and study your Bible do you first look at how to apply it to yourself or do you remind yourself of the sin of others who need to read it?

We also learn from these verses that Jesus knew he had a betrayer among the disciples. Jesus is not surprised by anything. He cannot be duped. He chose Judas knowing that he was the betrayer. He treated him like any of the other disciples with love and teaching him along with the other disciples. Jesus is not fooled by us as well. If we say we follow Jesus to others but we truly don't; Jesus knows our heart and he knows the truth about each of us. We can't hide anything from him, just as Judas was not able to hide his betrayal

In light of these truths how will you change your daily life? Will you seek to apply each passage of scripture to yourself alone? Will you be completely honest in your relationship with Jesus, with the understanding that he knows the truth already?
