Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips;
your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”
Isaiah 6:6-7 ESV
The last post we focused on our sad state of sinfulness. Now we come to the hope and the grace that God gives us. God is holy. We are sinners. But God makes us holy! Hallelujah! In this text today in Isaiah God has a remedy for Isaiah. He has recognized his sinful state before God and the seraphim gives him a solution. A burning coal was taken from the alter and put on his mouth. This may seem strange to us at first. But we need to understand the Old Testament solution for sin. The coal was taken from the alter where there would have been blood from the animal sacrifices. The blood on the coal is what had made Isaiah clean.
That Old Testament way of sacrifice was a picture of what Jesus would do. He was the ultimate sacrifice that took away our sinful state. Unlike the Old Testament this only had to happen once. Jesus died once for our forgiveness while the Old Testament picture of this had to be done again and again because it was not complete. Reading Hebrews 10 can give you a clear picture of this difference
Jesus died to save sinners. When we repent of our sin's like Isaiah did and trust in Jesus alone for our salvation we are made perfect. We are not perfect in character for we are in a process of sanctification and will not be perfect in that way this side of heaven because we have our sinful nature still. But we are deemed perfect and holy in position. God looks at his redeemed and sees Jesus perfection because his righteousness has been imputed to us.
Are you perfect in your position with God? Have you repented and put your faith in Jesus alone for your salvation?
For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. Hebrews 10:14 ESV
